Please Pick One

I picked Sicker Abdul.  Nigerian Protest

Her last name means “servant” in Arabic and I hope her first name is not a reflective of her first days on the earth.  She’s been identified as a Christian.  I don’t know her age.

She is one of the 180 girls named yesterday as among the students kidnapped from their school in Chibok, Nigeria on April 14th by Boko Haram.  Although 276 girls are still reported missing, we only have 180 names.  You can read more about the situation here.

The  kidnappers are reportedly selling these girls for about $12 each to potential “husbands.”

Praying for 180 girls by name – much less 276 girls – is overwhelming to me and my pathetic commitment to prayer. But I can pray for one Nigerian schoolgirl.  And I am asking you to pray for just one girl as well.

Please choose one name – one girl  – and pray for her until she is found.

I picked Sicker Abdul.  She’s my girl.

Who will you pick?

If it helps to hold you accountable, I invite you to share your choice in the comment section of this post.  Thank you.

I have chosen Rebeca Joseph to hold up in prayer. The Holy Spirit also lead me to the name Lydia Simon. I will be praying sincerely for these girls by name and for all of the girls as a group. May our Lord surround them. God have mercy on the souls of their captors, and may these men be convicted by the Holy Spirit to let these girls go.

There are eight girls named Deborah on this list…. and my heart breaks for each of them, and all of their ‘sisters’. Thanks to your post, and this list, I am praying for each of them by name. You see, Debra is my name, too. It is a powerful Biblical name, with a history and a heritage of leadership and honor and obedience to God. We share that heritage because of our names. I pray that God will raise these girls up with faith and strength just as He did Deborah in the Bible – to be courageous, to take a stand, and to show His Glory through the battle. ❤ #BringOurGirlsHome

  736. As a father, with a daughter taking exams, it’s unbearable to hear of the horror of the abduction, abuse snd sale these girls. This evil should be resisted by all. They should be with their loving families and at school taking exams. Kay Warren reminded us of an Eric Liddell quote; “God is not helpless among the ruins.” We pray mighty God that all the girls will be safely rescued and not one be lost, that their ruined lives will be fully restored and these innocents will be taken back to loving families and a caring community to be reintegrated. Father we pray for all who are suffering even now, not least our sisters in Christ. Two stand out, Saratu Emmanuel & Christiana Bitrus, but all whatever their religion are loved by God. Lord help in the horror of what they’re facing, the shock and fear of these poor children. Please come and break into that situation with your Holy Spirit. We pray for your powerful hand to be at work and help the rescuers of these girls to find them and get them all out safely. May your grace and peace be upon all the girls, their families and friends. May they not just endure, but may they one day be overcomers. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

So I decided to pray for the preteen girls in Taiwan being sold for sex. While there on assignment I wandered into the ‘wrong’ part of the city and saw young, young girls involved in the sex trade. It turned my stomach. This was a reminder to pray for those involved in sex trade.

I want to pray specifically for MARYAMU BULAMA who is your daughter, a princess because she is the daughter of a king. I want to pray that you protect her heart and mind, Lord. I pray that she will be a blessing to those around her; the other girls as well as her captors. I pray that you are revealed through this situation, and through Maryamu as the great comforter. Show your love to each person involved, that the innocent will feel peace and the guilty will feel conviction. Thank you for loving Maryamu more than your own life, and dying for her so that she may have life in you. Amen.

  975. Hey there. Your intentions are, no doubt, very good and in the right place.

However, we should try to get the list of names removed. Here’s why: 1) They’re minors, and many of their parents and community leaders have neither given permission for their names to be spread and have specifically requested anonymity because 2) they could be stigmatized on return to the village (they’ve noted that “kidnapping” is too often assumed to mean “raped” in that part of the world, which makes the girls ineligible for marriage, which is a huge deal in Nigeria), and 3) names in Nigeria tell you whether someone is Christian or Muslim, and if one can identify each girl as such, they may single out the Christian girls for more abuse.

I choose to love and pray for Comfort Amos and pray that she is being comforted at this very moment and is not being harmed and is not hungry and feels the Father’s love and knows He is with her. I’m praying for your safe return to your family and praying for your family. I can’t imagine their heavy hearts but pray they are comforted in knowing God is present and He loves them. “Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless.
Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them.
You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed,
so mere people can no longer terrify them.” – Psalm 10:17,18

    “The Lord’s promises are pure,
Like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over.
Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed,
preserving them forever from this lying generation,

While it’s an admirable idea to be praying for/thinking of these girls by name and hoping for the most positive outcomes, it’s actually highly unethical for their names to be made public without their/their parents’ express consent and this would never be allowed in the US. Having their names be made public can negatively affect their futures in so many ways like making it more difficult to find future partners (because of the likelihood of them having been raped and the stigma that carries) or making it more likely they will be victimized again in the future. Please consider while posting lists of names.

    Like

    • Thanks for this, Kelsie. I’ve heard mixed info on this & not sure what to do about the names since they’ve gone viral. I read that the parents wanted the names published since the girls are now dispersed into as many as four other countries and it helps to find them. I am aware of the shaming potential too, but this is a narrative we need to change & my hope is that this is exactly the way to do that. Anyway any time we are responding to a political situation, there are complexities and risks in our responses. I am (perhaps foolishly?) trusting that God’s Spirit is connecting us to these girls and mysterious, supernatural, holy things are possible.

1245. I will pray for Rebecca Kabul. Her name means “fulfilled wish and prayer.” Heavenly Father, we ask in Jesus Name that you will protect Rebecca Kabul from her captors and keep her safe. That she will feel your loving arms surrounding her always. We pray against the spirit of fear and ask that you will give Rebecca peace, courage, strength, and comfort. Flood Rebecca’s heart with your presence, and may your Holy Spirit be her guide and give her hope. We ask for favor, that you will hear and answer the cries of her heart, that her prayers will be fulfilled in Jesus Name. May Rebecca draw closer to you and may she experience your divine healing and freedom. I also pray for Rebecca’s family, that God will minister to them and give them hope during this time of pain and grieving.
